Following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police, many residents called for fundemental changes of the Minneapolis PD, including disbanding the department and replacing it with a Department of Public Safety.
Voters on Tuesday, however, voted against the bill that would bring much needed changes to the city’s approach on policing. According to Reuters, “Those who campaigned to keep the police department intact said it was too risky to go for a wholesale change in policing in the city, which is facing a crime wave. They also worried a national backlash from Republicans would be ignited if Minneapolis embarked on the change.”
